Cateogry: Encoragement
COMMITMENT: Unwavering Devotion
Commitment is one of those qualities that everyone seems to think he or she can define, until he or she is asked to define it. Recognizing committed couples is easier than describing one. One’s actions demonstrate commitment rather than their words. .............more detail

Detachment/ Faith
Faith is an attribute that was necessary for African Americans as they lived through racism, racial prejudice and discrimination in the United States. Not only did they long for a better life, they anticipated it. Faith is essential when building a healthy marriage. There must be a confidence that the relationship will work despite current difficulties, challenges or hardships..............more detail

What Scottie Wants
I consider myself somewhat of an elitist; I’m not entertained by the same sorts of things that hold the masses captive. I gave up television for nearly a decade, didn’t own one at all, and I was very content entertaining and educating myself with the real world. I found the programming offensive, even back then, and that was LONG before reality television and the degrading shows that overwhelm the airwaves today. Even since transitioning back into the world of the boob tube, I limit my television watching to a few tried and true shows that don’t insult my intelligence, gender, or race. .............more detail

I know he called at least 100 times.
“I just want my wife to have a good time,” he said. And you know, I uttered a yes as though it was the most natural thing to pick up and go to Paris. Well I was going somewhere anyway but the man said his wife had been through a lot and he wanted her first trip abroad to go well..............more detail

Marriage Relationships: Communication
How do you know if a man really loves you and if he wants to move on to the next level? I think that it’s all based on the man’s actions towards the woman and has nothing to do with what he says. If the man lets you in his world there is a pure connection established between the two. Opposed to a man who says all the right things but his actions say different. .............more detail

COMMUNICATION
Have you ever heard anyone utter, “We just out grew one another,” to describe why his or her relationship ended? What does it mean to outgrow another person? No two people grow physically, emotionally, or psychologically at the same pace. .............more detail

The “B” Side 3
I am dismayed at the rate of black on black relationship and marriage break-ups. Celebrities are splitting up quicker than polyester pants that are too tight. .............more detail

A Woman Worth her Weight in Gold …
Ladies, many of us are looking forward to getting married one day and having a family. The question is what are we doing while we are single to get ready for a husband and children? It takes more than just a notion to be a wife and mother. It’s not necessarily what we learn at school that prepares us—but a combination of what we learn at home, at church and at school that prepares us. It’s sitting at grandmother’s knee on a quiet Saturday afternoon, obtaining the wisdom from the older generation. It’s the advice from our mothers, aunts, older sisters and cousins that get us through dating and early relationships. .............more detail

Where are the real brothas?
How many times have you heard a woman ask the question, “Where are the real brothas?” Every brotha is a real brotha. If he’s living and breathing, he’s real. How she is defining “real brotha” is where the problem lies. The word real has no meaning when trying to define what is considered a good brotha. Most Black women aren’t looking for a good Black man, they are looking for a real Black man. There are plenty of Black men that are “real” it’s just that real doesn’t equal good..............more detail

Nephrologist Martin Pollak and his team found that a common genetic mutation of the APOL1 gene might be partly responsible for African Americans' susceptibility. The mutation likely arose due to natural selection because it protects against African sleeping sickness, Pollak wrote. Yet it also makes African Americans more vulnerable to kidney disease, according to the study released last month in the online issue of Science Magazine.
