| Clues to kidney disease in African Americans |
Nephrologist Martin Pollak and his team found that a common genetic mutation of the APOL1 gene might be partly responsible for African Americans' susceptibility.
The mutation likely arose due to natural selection because it protects against African sleeping sickness, Pollak wrote. Yet it also makes African Americans more vulnerable to kidney disease, according to the study released last month in the online issue of Science Magazine. .............more detail

Do you remember your elders speaking about “sugar in the blood”? Do you have a friend or family member who suffers from diabetes? The importance of understanding high blood sugar is critical to the management of our often fast-paced, unhealthy, and stressful lives. A few years ago I had the opportunity to visit the “Bodies – The Exhibition” and experienced the most engaging presentation on the anatomy and pathology of the human body. Cadavers, adult and fetus, were on display to showcase the miracle of the body and the importance of good health and exercise. This poignant visit, which highlighted all of our major bodily systems, provides the inspiration to urgently share information regarding sugar – the crack cocaine of the Black of the community!.............more detail

What is truly in a kiss? we all know that sharing a gentle, or passionate, embrace with that someone special can do a lot to make your heart race and make the worst of days suddenly seem just a little bit better. We stare captivated at the movie screen as we watch our favorite Hollywood stars lock lips, either suddenly or after a very long "will-they-or-won't-they" process. | Woman To Woman: Help A Brother Out |
Unlike women, most men are taught from an early age to cope quietly with pain instead of telling others about their ailments. Men like to be seen as problem solvers, and are sometimes reluctant to ask for help when in fact they should (let’s not even get started about asking for driving directions). Being told, either by family or peers, that big boys don’t cry seems to lead, years later, to a reluctance to seek medical attention for health afflictions, especially if symptoms are not plainly visible or are related to sexual health..............more detail

| Women: Don't Believe The Hype |
In 1988, the Hip Hop supergroup, Public Enemy had a string of hit records, one of those records coined the phrase, “Don’t Believe the Hype.” In the song, Flavor Flav, the rap group’s most animated character turned reality TV star, boisterously and repeated the phrase to beg listeners not fall victim to the hearsay that we come across daily. Today, I, an independent, strong, heterosexual African American male urge you to blow the dust off of that old tape, record, or CD one more time and play “Don’t Believe the Hype” in response to the “why-successful-black-women-cant-find-a-good-man” popular conversations going around lately..............more detail
